Coffee drinkers are less prone to risks of Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s Diseases, a new study suggests.
A great morning starts with a great cup of dark coffee and why it wouldn’t if the world’s favorite morning beverage could reduce the risks of mental relapses. The study was published in Frontiers in Neuroscience suggesting that darker coffee is better since it’s not the caffeine that keeps the brain healthy but the phenylindanes.
Phenylindanes are compounds contained in higher amounts in the darker roast coffees which keeps the brain healthy. These substances are proven to hamper two protein sections which are common to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. It prevents the toxic proteins known as tau and beta-amyloid from joining and thickening. The extreme accumulation causes the degeneration in the brain which could lead to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
The research analyzed the compounds in three distinctive roasts – light, dark and decaffeinated dark roast. Longer roasting coffee beans result in a better yield of phenylindanes. That is why dark roast coffee seems to have a higher protective impact. They discovered that caffeinated and decaffeinated dark roasts were likewise efficient in preventing the proteins from building up.
Krembil Brain Institute co-director Donald Weaver said, “Coffee consumption does seem to have some correlation to a decreased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. But we wanted to investigate why that is — which compounds are involved and how they may impact age-related cognitive decline.”
Last year, people in the US approximately consumed 3.4 billion pounds of coffee. The broad studies suggest that moderate drinking coffee is essentially good for the health whether it’s regular or decaffeinated.
A separate study published in JAMA Internal Medicine identified that coffee drinkers absolutely have a longer life compared to non-coffee drinkers. The beverage which can be consumed hot or cold has other substances that can alleviate the consequence colon and liver cancer, dementia, gout, and type 2 diabetes.
